SORRY ROOMMATES!
Death by Dyes, and Other Events
I had my last day of teaching yesterday. Strangely, I wasn't as emotional as I thought I'd be--it felt like it was the right time, and I biked away from the school at 4pm feeling pretty nonchalant. But I wanted to commemorate the day anyway, and luckily the new art teacher, the lovely Michelle, was there and happy to mark the day. I presented her with my succulent plant, which I'd had for over two years, and she gracefully accepted it. I'm excited to see how she settles into the job--I know she'll do great. I'll visit often, gotta visit my dad after all, and there are kiddos I want to keep tabs on. So there it is. Four years almost to the day, a pretty epic education on human nature, mental health, and my own strengths and weaknesses. I'll never regret a single moment of it. And I'm out.
And on to the next thing, my new-ish venture into the textile marketplace! I've been on the Etsy train before, but this time around I'm a little older and a little wiser. My goal at this point is to get an online store up and running as a sort of side business while I'm in graduate school. I want my products to complement my conceptual work, function alongside it and serve as a more readily consumable version of it. Currently, I'm making lots of dip-dyed towels and tote bags, as well as some screen printed tote bags and other pillow-type items. I'm really into both of these techniques right now, as they both feel very quick and simple and can be repeated very efficiently. I love repetition, and plan to explore that in my conceptual work come September. so this feels pretty natural. I'm excited to see how it goes.
Still Alive, and I Made a Bunch of Fabric!
The real great thing about being an art teacher is using your own classroom as a studio after hours!
I had been developing this fabric based on photos from Berlin for a new friend named James of Minimal Bags SF. He and I were talking about me designing some liner fabrics for his upcoming line of bags, which are so cute and you can see them here: http://minimalbagssf.com/. My bags, called the "Berlin Bag," should be released to the public in the coming months, and I'll let the world know as soon as it happens.
In the meantime, CHECK OUT THIS FABRIC IT'S GREAT!
To be continued...
Stevie Nicks
HOLD THE PHONE.
Stevie Nicks had a secret shoebox full of sweet self-portraits from her past, now revealed to the public at the Morrison Hotel Gallery--they are, like, THE BEST.
From the Morrison Hotel Gallery website:
Beginning in the mid-seventies, Stevie Nicks took a series of Polaroid self-portraits in her home as well as hotel rooms around the world while on tour. Earlier this year, during the recording of her new solo album 24 Karat Gold - Songs From the Vault, she decided to share these never-before-seen self portraits. Each one of these archival pigment prints is hand-signed and numbered by Stevie Nicks.
"Some people don't sleep at night - I am one of those people. These pictures were taken long after everyone had gone to bed - I would begin after midnight and go until 4 or 5 in the morning. I stopped at sunrise - like a vampire... I never really thought anyone would ever see these pictures, they went into shoeboxes, where they remained. I did everything - I was the stylist, the makeup artist, the furniture mover, the lighting director. It was my joy - I was the model..."

I'm so into these. So inspired. Thank you, Stevie.
Tourism
Being a tourist in my own city is weird and hilarious.
Ai Weiwei at Alcatraz, opening day, Sept. 28th, 2014.
The best part was all the selfies people were taking in the prison cells.
